Exercise Therapy in Western Sydney
Exercise therapy is one of the most evidence-based tools in physiotherapy. The research is consistent across conditions — structured, progressive exercise produces better long-term outcomes than passive treatment alone. We use it for injury rehabilitation, post-surgical recovery, chronic pain management, workplace conditioning and sports performance.
What makes it different from going to the gym is clinical specificity. Every exercise is chosen based on your assessment. A warehouse worker returning to heavy lifting after a back injury has completely different needs to a post-knee-replacement patient or a runner with patellofemoral pain. We build the program around the person, not a generic template.
When Exercise Therapy Is Used
Exercise therapy applies across a much wider range of conditions and presentations than most people expect:
✅Post-surgical rehabilitation Graduated loading following knee replacement, hip replacement, ACL reconstruction, rotator cuff repair and spinal surgery. We work within your surgeon's protocol and progress each phase with clear milestones.
✅Injury rehabilitation Progressive rebuilding of strength, stability and movement after muscle strains, ligament injuries and tendinopathy. The loading program is the treatment and not an afterthought to it.
✅Chronic pain management Graded activity for long-term pain where reconditioning and movement confidence are as important as tissue healing. Exercise is one of the most consistently evidence-backed interventions for chronic pain.
✅Workplace injury return to work Work conditioning programs specific to the physical demands of the job. A concrete labourer and a data entry worker need completely different programs.
✅Falls prevention Lower limb strength and balance training for older residents in Liverpool and surrounding areas.
✅Sports conditioning Targeted programs for athletes managing injury, building resilience and improving movement quality.
✅NDIS physiotherapy goals Exercise programs toward mobility, independence and daily function goals for NDIS participants.
How Exercise Therapy Works at Vital Action Physio
Programs are delivered in two parts. Supervised in-clinic sessions where your physio watches how you move, adjusts the load in real time and progresses the exercises as you improve. And a home program you follow between visits.
The in-clinic component is not just observation. Your physio catches compensatory movement patterns that cannot be identified from a written program, makes adjustments that only work when someone is watching, and keeps the program progressing at the right pace. Most patients are surprised by how different the exercises feel with a physio coaching them compared to doing them on their own.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Yes. Exercise physiologists focus on chronic disease management and fitness. Physiotherapists diagnose and treat musculoskeletal injuries and use manual therapy alongside exercise. Our exercise therapy is prescribed by physiotherapists as part of a clinical treatment plan and not a fitness program.
-
Yes. The program is designed around your current pain level and progresses from there. Starting at an appropriate level and building gradually is the whole point. If pain is severe and acute, your physio may use hands-on treatment first before introducing exercise.
-
Usually not much. Most programs use bodyweight, basic resistance bands and everyday objects. If specific equipment is needed your physio will tell you what and where to find it affordably.
-
This depends on the condition and the stage of recovery. Early in rehabilitation, more frequent check-ins allow faster progression. Later in the program, sessions become less frequent as you become more independent. Most patients attend one to two clinic sessions per week with daily home exercises.
-
Yes. Exercise therapy delivered by a physiotherapist is claimable under physiotherapy extras cover with most Australian health funds. It may also be covered under Workers Compensation, NDIS and CTP.

No referral needed for a private appointment. Medicare EPC, Workers Compensation and NDIS patients need relevant documentation.
