Does your Neck hurt?
Neck pain is one of the most common conditions we treat at Vital Action Physio, and one of the most under-treated. Most people put up with it for months, trying a new pillow, doing stretches from watching a couple Youtube videos before finally booking in. By that point the stiffness and muscle tension have become entrenched patterns that take more work to shift than they would have weeks earlier.
We see neck pain across all demographics at our Western Sydney clinics. Clinical staff from Liverpool Hospital with occupational neck strain from patient handling and sustained postures. Commuters on the Liverpool City rail line who spend 45 minutes each way on their phones. Desk workers in the Parramatta CBD with longstanding postural pain. Truck drivers covering the Hume Highway with stiffness from hours behind the wheel.
Neck pain responds very well to physiotherapy when the right cause is identified and treated properly.
Types of Neck Pain We Treat
✅Postural neck pain: The most common type. Sustained forward head posture at a screen, while driving or using a phone. Creates chronic loading on the cervical joints and upper trapezius. Highly responsive to manual therapy and postural correction.
✅Cervicogenic headaches: Headaches that originate from the neck rather than within the head. Often felt at the base of the skull and behind the eye. Frequently misdiagnosed as tension headaches. Physiotherapy is one of the most effective treatments available.
✅Whiplash: Soft tissue injury from sudden acceleration-deceleration, this is most commonly found from motor vehicle accidents. CTP-accredited management at Liverpool and Eastern Creek.
✅Acute wry neck: Sudden onset of severe neck pain and stiffness, often on waking. Usually resolves quickly with targeted manual therapy.
✅Cervical radiculopathy: Nerve root compression causing pain, numbness or tingling into the arm and hand. Requires thorough neurological assessment.
The Neck Pain and Headache Connection
If you have regular headaches that start at the base of the skull, travel over the top of your head, or sit behind one eye, your neck is likely the source. The suboccipital muscles and the upper three cervical joints refer pain directly to the head and face. When irritated, they produce headaches identical to tension headaches, but that respond differently to treatment.
Physiotherapy, specifically cervical manual therapy and dry needling, is one of the most effective treatments for cervicogenic headaches. Many patients who have managed headaches with medication for years see a significant reduction after physiotherapy once the cervical source is properly addressed.
How We Treat Neck Pain
Cervical manual therapy: Joint mobilisation and manipulation of the cervical and upper thoracic spine to restore movement and reduce pain.
Dry needling: Targeting trigger points in the upper trapezius, levator scapulae and suboccipitals — the muscles that become chronically tight in postural and occupational neck pain.
Postural correction: Identifying the postural habits and workstation setup contributing to the problem, plus specific corrective exercises.
Neural mobilisation: For neck pain with referred arm symptoms, specific techniques to restore nerve mobility from the neck into the arm.
Deep cervical strengthening: Targeted strengthening to support the neck long-term and prevent recurrence.

Yes. Cervicogenic headaches respond very well to manual therapy and dry needling. If your headaches start at the base of the skull, worsen with neck movement, or are consistently on one side, they are very likely cervicogenic.
